The Final Fantasy XI (and PlayOnline)
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are still going on and it is definitely making an impact on game-play.
Square-Enix made a somewhat stupid decision to do a major update during these attacks and many, many people suffered from timeout errors and failed updates. I couldn't update for over 24 hours and when I finally did, my plants were dead. Not being able to connect is a real problem in a persistent-world massive multiplayer online game (MMOG); especially one as high maintenance as FFXI.
Unfortunately for Square-Enix (and even more so for their customers) DDoS attacks are not only hard to fend off, but even harder to pinpoint the source of.
The fact that this is happening should server as a warning to other MMOGs that network connectivity can make or break online gaming. Worlds of Warcraft (WoW), EverQuest, or virtually any other massive multiplayer onling game could be hit by something like this. Worse still, there is always the chance that rival companies could launch attacks against each other as a form of corporate espionage.
We are swimming deeper and deeper into the computer age...
