. This is a Sci-Fi (my favorites) movie made in Poland and directed by Mamoru Oshii (
fame). I found it at Blockbuster of all places and when I saw that it was directed by Mamoru Oshii (see - marketing works), I went ahead and bought it. When I finished watching it, I was very pleasantly surprised.
Like GitS, it is slow but I think Oshii likes to give time for reflection. There is not much dialog but it does have an English (as opposed to the original Polish) soundtrack. Its theme has been done a few times; a world with virtual reality (here a game) where reality and virtual reality is getting hard to distinguish (see
eXistenZ,
The Matrix, etc...), except in
Avalon it is done very well.
If you've played any MMORPGs or other online games, many of the references will work for you. Since I play, I think this is one of the reasons I liked
Avalon so much. That's not all that did it for me. As a fan of GitS, I really like the cinematography and score. Most of the shots had that anime look and feel and reminded me alot of the darkness and depth of
Serial
Experiments: Lain and the brooding, sad, lost feeling of GitS. The score pushed all of it home as it blended nicely and worked well with the imagery.
Although I was skeptical at first, I was pleased by
Avalon. I plan on watching it a few more times before it gets shoved in my ever-increasing DVD library. Check out if you like - funny enough, you can rent it at Blockbuster too.
