In business (especially in my industry: software), we get a chance to deal with many different personalities. One of those that I have trouble dealing with are most marketing people. Of course there are exceptions, and I know a few, but most of these people are just downright slimy.
For instance, I have (on a couple of different occasions, involving different people) been privy to conversations involving marketers and sales people. The conversations usually go like this:
Engineer: "But you are claiming that our product does some thing it doesn't do."
Marketing: "I don't care."
Engineer: "You don't care?!"
Marketing: "No. By the time they realize it doesn't quite do what they want, they've already bought it. I've done my job."
I have mental trouble dealing with people like this. I mean I
really have a hard time with people like this! There is no conscience among these people, no sense of obligation to honesty.
I look back at history though and wonder, do we need these kind of people. If it were up to the engineers, there would be no software industry, they'd be giving their work away. The Steve Wozniak's of the world need the Steve Jobs'. While this relationship must exists, I think there is a line that can be drawn and unfortunately, too many marketing and sales people in the software industry overstep this line.
