Today was George W. Bush's inauguration day. Something that signifies four more years of his heavy handed foreign policy, his arrogant, self-righteous attitude toward his constituency, his bumbling speech and general alienation of the rest of the world. Today is a celebration of all things America should not be.
Conservative Republicans do not agree with Bush. Liberal Democrats do not agree with Bush. Independents, Libertarians, Free-speakers, true Christians, Hippies, Minorities, Gays and Lesbians, Unions, the Unemployed, me, and probably even you - do not agree with Bush. So why his inauguration today? Because corporations agree with Bush and many people have very, very short memories.
It should come as no surprise that this year's inauguration had the tightest and broadest security of any inauguration - ever! This includes such measures as air marshalls on
every airplane entering or leaving the United States during the ceremony, a no fly zone that is nearly twice the size of the one last year, and security checks just to
enter the parade area.
Some argue this is necessary because of September 11th. They say the 9/11 changed everything. The argument goes something like: We must be careful because many countries are jealous of the freedom we have and they want to take it away. Ever since 9/11 we are not as safe as we used to be.
Here's where the short memory comes in to play. September 11th happened
because of Bush being in office. The motivation for the attacks was the Bush administration's attitude toward the rest of the world. Terrorist don't attack the United States because they are jealous of what we have. Terrorists attack the US because we threaten to spread our "freedom" (where you hear "freedom" in the Bush administration's rhetoric, substitute "subjugation and forced-capitalist values" and you'll see why the world is terrified by Bush).
America has forgotten that the reason for the security at the inauguration today is
because of who is being inaugurated. The Bush administration offers to save us from the danger they have created. Chew on that for a while and you will see just why there is no cause for celebration today.
Welcome to four more years of jeopardy and increased risk of terrorism. Long live Bush!
