I had the misfortune of watching
Open Water on DVD tonight. I have never been more disappointed with a movie than I was after watching Open Water. >:-o
The premise of the movie (based on a true story) is that a couple goes out on a scuba diving trip. When the operators of the scuba company's boat are getting ready to head back in, they accidentally miscount the passengers and leave the couple in the middle of the ocean. The premise is spooky and sets up a good "desperation" movie.
I disregarded all of the hype when the movie came out (as I usually do with any movie) and decided to watch it purely for the psychological factor. I was disheartened to see that the movie was so poorly done that even
that inherent factor was diluted.
From the first minute it was easily noted that the cinematography was poor, the dialog was weak and the character sketches were shallow. Things got worse from there. The interaction between the couple was very forced and awfully plastic. Any sense of desperation the scenes might have had were washed out by the predictability of the couple actions and the poor acting.
When things start to get old, the movie abruptly ends in a severe let down that leaves you wondering what you missed. The writer and director
Chris Kentis should really stick to his day job.
Steer clear of this one unless you plan on wasting an hour and 20 minutes and $3.99 for the rental.
